Spuistraat 199
Squat De Slang (Snake squat)
This building was squatted in 1983. Before that time the four upper floors were rented by ANP (General Dutch Press Agency). On the ground floor was a garage; at the facade was a sign board 'Firestone'. In 1987 and 1997 the walls were painted. The building is used for living and creative activities. It is one of the 'Tabakspanden' (Tobacco Buildings) that have been bought by real estate developing company De Key. The Tabakspanden will be rebuilt and partly demolished in favour of new constructions. No more snakes or garages.
