Prinsengracht 739-741
Business property
Year of construction: 1890
Architect: Ed. Cuypers
Style: Neo Renaissance
In 1876 the Amsterdam Melk Inrichting (Amsterdam Milk Institution) was founded for the distribution of milk in a hygienic way. In 1890 the AMI moved to this building on the Prinsengracht. On a frieze above the entrance is a relief made by Pierre van den Bossche, depicting a goat-cart with milk cans. In 1917 AMI merged with a number of other milk producers into the VAMI. This organisation was famous countrywide for its VAMI icecream, served from characteristic ice carts. In 1962 VAMI was bought by Unilever. The building was transformed into a garage and later into an office building.
