Amstelveld 10

Amstelveld 10

Amstelveld 10
Amstelkerk
Year of construction: 1668-1670
Architect: Daniël Stalpaert

A simple wooden church, believed to be a replica of Het BehoudenHuys (1596) on Nova Zembla. But the building has the same size as the Oosterkerk, also designed by Stalpaert. Tradition has it that Napoleon once housed his horse here. In 1840 reconstructed in neo-gothic style. Around 1985 acquired in very bad shape by Stadsherstel and renovated. A curious church building that has been threatened with destruction ever since it was built, but still stands. Amstelveld is a desolate square in wintertime, but in the summer it has one of the most beautiful terraces in town.
